Chapter Six

Dinner could have been cooked by a Michelin starred chef, it was that good.

A sumptuous banquet served on the very best of china. The recent loss of appetite disappeared, and I had gorged on a huge amount of the food.

Candles brought light to the darkness.

Despite only meeting Grace a few hours before, I felt comfortable in her company. She was delightful in every way.

I broke our feast and asked, “Where are you from, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“I was born in the West Indies but came to England a long time ago. My family owned a plantation over there, but there was civil unrest, so we left.”

I knew the West Indies, commonly known as the Caribbean, but never had I heard it used by somebody as young as Grace appeared to be.

“Where about in the West Indies are you from?”

“Martinique. It was quite beautiful, and I miss it a lot.”

“How long ago did you come to England?”

A confused expression settled across her face, and I felt rude for prying, but I couldn’t leave it alone.

“I don’t really remember.” A wash of sadness splashed over her momentarily.

“That doesn’t matter.”

I looked at the table, filled with food, and wondered how she’d managed to buy it?

“Who does your shopping for you?”

“An old friend of the family stops by every few days and fetches what I need.”

“Oh, good. At least somebody is looking after you.”

She whispered, “I’m still lonely.”

“Well, you don’t have to be any longer. I’ll stop by as and when you want me to. We can be friends.”

Grace reached across and took hold of my hand. She was still cold, as was I.

I shivered.

“Sorry,” she said.” My mum used to tell me I had cold hands. Cold hands, warm heart.”

“Don’t apologise. I’ve always been nesh.”

“Nesh–my grandma used to say that. How funny, I’ve not heard it in years.”

“How old are you, Grace?”

“I’ll be twenty-seven next birthday.” She looked younger if truth be told. “What about you?”

“Nearly thirty-eight for me.”

“No matter. You’re still very pretty.”

I felt my face flush at the compliment. “Thank you, Grace.”

She nodded her head. “Come on, Mia. I don’t want you to go hungry.”

The truth was, I was stuffed and had eaten far too much. “Why don’t we save some of this delicious food until later?”

“Yes, that’s a good idea. I could send some home with Frank when he next calls.”

There was something simplistic and childlike about Grace, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. I sensed some form of learning difficulty, or maybe a touch of autism, but hated myself for making either assumption. She seemed to know her own mind, but at times, I felt her fade in and out, almost like she was there one minute and gone the next.

“I’m sure he would like that.”

She turned and smiled at me.

“You know, I’ve been on my own for such a long time, I feel like I don’t know how to be around people any longer. I promise I’ll get better at it, if you do come back and see me.
